Hi ajfitz,

Modelling air-water interfaces in k-Wave is highly challenging due to the very high impedance differences (there is a factor of 1000 difference in the density). We have also seen very large transmitted wave amplitudes when going from air to water (the reverse is easier to model, as the transmission from water to air is basically zero). The model is convergent, so if you increase the number of points per wavelength, you'll eventually get the correct answer. However, for this particular setup, the grid dimensions you need might be prohibitively large.

I'm not sure what you mean by your second question with the source in water. What is the interface and why do you expect a 65dB loss?

Brad.

Hello,

I am attempting to study propagation of US in water and air. I am seeing inaccurate reflection/transmission at the air/water interface. If i implement a source in air close to the air/water interface, I see gain across the interface (i.e. say 10Pa in air and 600Pa in water). Is there something I am missing that is causing this artifact.

Also, when I implement the source in water, I do not see a 65dB loss across the interface as expected. I have attempted setting the 'Smooth' option to false for medium properties and this did not help.

Thank you in advance.
