Hi yuvalbs,

A typical ultrasound probe has a finite elevation height (or element length) on the order of 5-10mm. This affects the shape of the ultrasound beam, and for imaging applications, it means the transducer also has some sensitivity to scatterers that are out of the imaging plane. If you shrink the size of the transducer in the z-dimension, your transducer will act more like a line-source rather than a rectangular aperture. This will affect the beam shape in the out-of-plane direction, and thus the directionality on receive.

I'd suggest the best way to check whether these effects are important for your application is to run two simulations. First, with the actual elevation height of your transducer, and then with a reduced height to see if it affects the behaviour you are trying to simulate.

Hope that helps,

Brad.

Hi

I am trying to run a simulation based on the example_us_bmode_linear_transducer code.
If my transducer is about 3 grid points, can I decrease the z axis points to 64 or 32 without damaging the simulation physical reliability?

my simulation Dimensions are:
Nx = 2048/sc - 2*pml_x_size; % [grid points]
Ny = 512/sc - 2*pml_y_size; % [grid points]
Nz = 128/sc - 2*pml_z_size; % [grid points]

note that Nx and Ny where modified to mach the depth, pulse Freq and transducer amount, but Nz number is from the original example.
